Oily Skin Remedies

Oily skin is often a genetic problem and also is linked to hormones, but there are oily skin remedies to help. Often, teens have oily skin but some people experience it far beyond their teen years. Of course, the good news here is that oily skin tends to look young for a longer period of time. People with oily skin wrinkle less.

However, those with a shiny face probably aren’t too excited about that news at the current time. There’s no way to alter genetics or completely control oily skin, but there are ways to cope.

Best Picks For Oily Skin Remedies

These oily skin remedies will help your skin look and feel its best.

  1. Keep your skin clean – Oily skin can look and feel dirty even when it isn’t.  Keeping skin as clean as possible will help control the shine. Wash your face twice a day.  Glycerine soaps like Clearly Natural, Kirk’s, Neutrogena, Johnson and Johnson Purpose Gentle Skin Cleansing Bar, Burt’s Bees and Pears Transparent Oil Clear Soap are good choices for oily skin. Mixing in a couple drops of Ivory liquid with the soap helps to dissolve oil.
  2. Use aloe vera – Pure aloe vera gel can help to dissolve oil and clean the pores.  Pat some on two or three times a day and let it dry on the skin.
  3. Use astringents – Wipe just the oily parts of your face with rubbing alcohol or Witch Hazel to help dry up the oiliness.
  4. Use oil absorbing tissues – Products such as Burt’s Bees Wings of Love Rice Paper powdered facial tissues help to remove the shine between cleansing.  These transparent papers absorb the oil and shine to make the skin look and feel better.
  5. Use water based makeup – If you can go without makeup, that’s great, but if you can’t, then use water-based makeup. Don’t use cream foundation and opt for powder blusher.
  6. Try cold water rinses – Rinse the skin twice a day with cold water to help remove excess oil.
  7. Use tea tree oil – Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the Melaleuca or Austrialian paperbark tree, and is a natural disinfectant used for many purposes. Applied to the face twice a day, it can help to control oily skin.
  8. Avoid moisturizers – Oily skinned people should avoid moisturizer, mineral oil or petroleum oil.  Applying these products only adds more oil to skin and can result in clogged pores and acne.
  9. Use a masque – There are several clay masques on the market for treating oily skin.  Some popular brands include Aveda, Ahava, Avon and Proactive.  Apply two or three times per week, depending on how oily your skin is. Apply to face, allow to dry on skin for about 20 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.
  10. Make a scrub – Mix 2 tablespoons almond meal, 1 tablespoon lemon rind and 3 tablespoons milk. Gently massage into the skin with a warm washcloth; rinse thoroughly.

Oily skin comes with disadvantages and advantages. Oily skin tends to wrinkle slower, therefore providing a more youthful appearance in older age, but too much oil can make your skin look dirty and if not taken care of, can clog pores and cause acne. While you can’t totally eliminate oily skin, you can do things to help keep it under control. These oily skin remedies are effective for doing just that.
