Indigestion Remedies

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is pain, burning or discomfort after eating, and many times, it can be relieved with simple indigestion remedies. Indigestion is a common problem but the causes and symptoms can vary from person to person.

Indigestion Remedies

There are as many indigestion remedies as there are causes for indigestion.   Try these tried and true remedies the next time you experience indigestion.

  1. Take an antacid – Antacids such as Alka-Seltzer, Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta and others neutralize stomach acid, giving fast relief.
  2. Drink peppermint tea – Peppermint has been found to effectively treat symptoms of indigestion.
  3. Chew mint leaves – Chew on fresh mint leaves or add to a hot cup of tea.
  4. Sip vinegar – Swallow a teaspoon of vinegar as soon as you feel indigestion coming on.
  5. Drink soda water – Dissolve ½ teaspoon of baking soda in 4 ounces of warm water and drink for very effective, super fast relief.  This remedy isn’t recommended for those on a low-sodium diet.
  6. Try yellow mustard – Swallow a spoonful of yellow mustard.
  7. Drink chamomile or ginger tea – Chamomile and ginger are both effective at relieving nausea and stomach upset.
  8. Chew on parsley – Chew on parsley sprigs after your meal to help digest food
  9. Eat grapes – Eating grapes can relieve indigestion symptoms.
  10. Drink warm water – Drink two 8 oz. glasses of warm water for fast relief.
  11. Drink cinnamon water – Add 2 teaspoons of cinnamon to a glass of water.
  12. Eat papaya – Papaya aids in digesting foods.
  13. Drink pineapple juice – Drink 4 ounces of pineapple juice to quickly relieve symptoms.
  14. Try lemon and honey – Mix equal parts honey and lemon juice in a glass of warm water and drink.
  15. Try cumin seeds and coriander -Make a mixture of cumin seeds and coriander leaf juice and add to a glass of water.  Add a little bit of salt; drink. This is one of the most effective home treatments for indigestion.
  16. Massage the abdomen – Mix some raw garlic in with Soya oil and apply to the abdomen for fast relief.

While these remedies are often effective at treating indigestion, there are several things you can do to help prevent it.  Avoid alcohol, caffeine, tomatoes, spicy foods, greasy or fatty foods, whole milk, carbonated beverages, and chocolate (in excess). Cut down or stop smoking. If you are overweight, lose the extra weight by exercising, which also aids in digestion.  Raise your head when sleeping by sleeping on two pillows. Avoid tight clothing.  Eat smaller meals and don’t eat just before going to bed. Avoid stress as much as possible.
