High blood pressure is a common problem today and there are several high blood pressure remedies. According to the American Heart Association, over 63,000,000 are being treated for this condition. Because it’s a serious condition, it’s important to see a doctor if you are unable to control your blood pressure with preventative measures. There are things you can do however, that often help to lower or prevent high blood pressure.

  2. Exercise – For mild hypertension, aerobic exercise for 20 to 30 minutes, 3 or 4 days per week can help to reduce blood pressure. It will also help you lose weight (#1). Elliptical trainers are a good way to get a low-impact cardio workout. Walking, dancing, swimming and bicycling also are effective. Those with extremely high blood pressure should not exercise until their blood pressure is under control. Check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.
  3. Consume less sodium – Sodium raises the blood pressure, so anyone with hypertension should avoid salty foods. Read labels on products to figure the sodium amount. Most processed foods are high in sodium. Opt for foods labeled “no salt added” whenever possible.
  4. Buy a blood pressure monitor – At home monitoring can help you to keep a close watch on your blood pressure and may help you avoid trips to the doctor. With at-home monitoring, you can watch for problems and seek medical attention when necessary.
  5. Get plenty of potassium – Potassium has been found to lower blood pressure. Most people should eat 3 or 4 servings of potassium-rich fruits and vegetables each day. Good choices are bananas, raisins, yogurt, orange juice and avocados. Supplements can be dangerous for some people so it’s better to get potassium through fruits and vegetables.
  6. Drink milk – Some studies found that calcium can help to lower blood pressure. Milk also contains potassium, giving you a double whammy of protection from hypertension.
  7. Quit smoking – If you smoke, stop. Nicotine is a major cause of high blood pressure. If you need help quitting, try nicotine gum, patches or something to stop your smoking cravings, or have your doctor prescribe one of the newer medications that help people quit.
  8. Lower your stress – Type A personalities – workaholics, angry, frustrated, highly stressed or aggressive individuals – are often victims of high blood pressure. Learn to relax, take a breath and do some things you enjoy to unwind.
  9. Cut down on alcohol – Insulin is required to metabolize alcohol, and the rise in insulin can cause an increase in blood pressure. If you have hypertension, drink only in moderation.

Remember it’s important to see a doctor if you have high blood pressure, and especially if you are pregnant, which can be even more dangerous. Your doctor will decide the best course of action for treating your hypertension. Many people require medication. However, these high blood pressure remedies should help in your fight to bring your blood pressure under control.
