Cough Remedies

A cough can be very annoying and even embarrassing, but cough remedies can help bring coughs to a halt.  Coughing is a natural reflex of the body to eliminate mucus or other foreign material from the throat and lungs. Coughing can be caused by many things, including:

  • Colds
  • Smoking
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Weather
  • Inflammation of the larynx
  • Flu
  • Disease
  • Heartburn
  • Certain medications
  • Dry throat

Remedies

Try these cough remedies for fast relief.

  1. Have a warm bowl of soup – Warm soup, especially chicken soup, can help to remove phlegm and mucus caught in your lungs.
  2. Sip herbal tea – Hyssop and chamomile tea are effective for relieving a cough.
  3. Suck on horehound – Horehound is an herb that’s available over the counter in cough drop form.
  4. Take a hot shower – The warm steam helps loosen phlegm in your lungs.
  5. Enjoy a banana – Bananas are a good cure for heartburn, which is often the cause of a cough.
  6. Stop smoking – Smoking is an irritant and can lead to a chronic cough, and even worse, lung cancer.
  7. Use cough medicine – Cough medicine helps reduce a cough, but be sure to select the right formula.  If you have a dry cough, you need a cough suppressant, or antitussive.  If you are coughing up phlegm, take a cough expectorant.
  8. Have a cough drop – Cough drops are one of the easiest ways to quiet a cough.
  9. Eat grapes – Grapes are a natural expectorant. Have a serving every day.
  10. Elevating the head of your bed – This allows your sinuses to drain, which helps relieve coughing. Elevating the head of the bed also helps for coughs caused by heartburn.
  11. Use aromatherapy – Mix 3 drops cedar, peppermint, myrrh or eucalyptus oil with some olive or almond oil and rub into your chest several times a day.
  12. Rub Vicks VapoRub on the soles of your feet – Though not scientifically proven, many people swear by it.
  13. Drink grape juice and honey – Mix 1 cup grape juice with 1 teaspoon of honey and drink. Note: Honey is not safe for small children.
  14. Try this old fashioned homemade cough syrup recipe – Homemade Cough Syrup.
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 4 ounces lemon
  • 2 ounces whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon glycerin

Mix ingredients thoroughly and heat through.  Note: This cough syrup should be avoided by women who are pregnant or nursing.

Last but not least you can make yourself a hot toddy – Here are 3 yummy recipes:

  • To a cup of hot tea, add 2 ounces brandy, 1 teaspoon sugar and a lemon slice.
  • Mix 1 ½ ounces whiskey with 1/3 ounce lemon juice and 1 ounce of honey in 3 ounces of hot water.
  • Mix ¼ cup rum in a cup of hot coffee.

*This remedy is not recommended for women that are pregnant or nursing, and obviously not recommended for children.

A cough that is chronic, or accompanied by sharp chest pains or shortness of breath should be evaluated by a doctor.  For the occasional cough, these cough remedies can be quite effective.
