7 Home Remedies For Itchy Scalp

Itchy scalp is an embarrassing condition, since it is often associated with what many consider to be the result of unsanitary habits, such as dandruff and head lice, is actually the result of a variety of health issues.  These include, but are not limited to things such as allergies, dry scalp and seborrhea.

There are a plethora of products on the market; however itchy scalp can be treated at home using natural products.  The following remedies are safe for adults, as well as children.

•    Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is widely known for its hair and scalp benefits. There are several shampoos on the market that contain tea tree oil and help with itching.  Tea tree oil itself can also be applied directly to the scalp with a cotton ball or a spray can be made by adding several drops of tea tree oil to a cup of water.  Work the mixture into your scalp by separating the hair into sections and saturating the area with the solution.  Another method is to adding several drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo.

•    Natural Oils
There are several natural oils in addition to tea tree that can provide relief from an itchy scalp.  These include olive oil, jojoba oil and coconut oil.  These natural oils act as a substitute for the natural production of sebum by penetrating the skin and thereby moisturizing the scalp.  Treatment with natural oils is recommended for use every other day to achieve the optimum results.

•    Apple Cider Vinegar
Another remedy is apple cider vinegar.  Prior to bedtime, mix 4 cups of warm water and 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar.  Expose the scalp by parting your hair, then dab your scalp with a cotton ball soaked in the mixture.  Go to sleep, with your hair wrapped in a warm towel.  Cover and refrigerate the remaining mixture for use as a rinse after shampooing the next morning.  Shampoo your hair and after conditioning simply pour it over your hair, work it in, and leave it.  Style as usual.  This treatment will give you temporary itch relief.

•    Diet Changes
A healthy diet of raw food with plenty of vitamins is beneficial for itchy scalp. Choose whole grain breads and leafy green vegetables.

•    Fatty Acids
Supplements of essential fatty acids also have been effective in relieving an inflamed or itchy scalp the daily recommended supplements are flax seed oil, salmon oil or primrose oil.  

•    Vitamins
Several vitamins help avoid dry skin and are important for a healthy scalp.  The recommended vitamins for this treatment are vitamins A, B, and E.  

•    Kelp
Kelp is a plant that can provide minerals, such as iodine, critical for hair growth, scalp healing and overall skin health.  

Additional Helpful Suggestions

Avoid fried foods, milk products, white sugar, white flour, nuts, seafood or chocolate. Also, consider discontinuing the use of mousse, sprays and gel.  These products tend to dry out the scalp, causing it to itch.
