What are the most Effective Herbs for Inflammation?

The type of herbs for inflammation will depend on whether it is an internal or external inflammation. Inflammation can occur in any part of the body as the result of an injury, trauma or illness. The location and cause of the inflammation will determine the best herbs to relieve the symptoms.

Herbs for Inflammation caused by Trauma

  • Arnica is produced from the flowers of the plant. It is particularly effective when used in trauma induced inflammation resulting, for example, from broken bones or surgery. It comes in various forms and is safe for use on any part of the body as a poultice, oil and as a tincture or tea to drink.
  • St John’s Wort is extracted from the flowers of the plant. It has several medicinal properties and is used in treatment of many medical conditions, including inflammation caused by trauma. It also helps to repair damaged veins and nerves.
  • Cayenne is well known for its properties that help to boost circulation. Circulation may be compromised due to an injury or trauma and needs to be restored to promote healing. Cayenne is an herb that has culinary uses, or it can be applied externally to the inflamed area.  It can safely be mixed with other herbs to combat inflammation.

Herbs for Inflammation caused by Infections.

  • Garlic is widely used in cooking for its distinctive flavour.  It contains strong antibacterial, antiviral and anti-pathogen properties. It is one of the most effective remedies for inflammations caused by infection. T can be used internally and externally and works well in combination with herbs like cayenne that boost the circulation. Raw garlic is readily available in supermarkets and can be crushed to use as a tincture, juice or oil. It is very effective when used in a poultice and can safely be mixed with other herbs for inflammation.

Whatever the cause, inflammation in any part of the body is an indication of infection either viral or bacterial and should never be ignored.  Failure to treat quickly and effectively will lead to a more serious illness.  Patients may then require antibiotics to tackle the inflammation that may have unpleasant side effects.

Symptoms can vary, but in general external inflammation will result in swelling, redness, pain and discomfort in the inflamed area.  Particular care must be taken to keep any open or unhealed wounds that are inflamed clean and sterile to prevent further infection.

With internal inflammation the patient may have a high temperature, fever and in severe cases appear to be disorientated.  Antibiotics may be injected or given through a drip direct into the blood stream to combat severe infections. Minor internal inflammations can safely be treated with herbs for inflammation often in combination with other herbs to promote circulation and combat infections.
