Let’s face it–we’re all worried about getting older and we long to stay healthy and feel great for as long as possible.  It can be done with anti-aging steps, the process of slowing down the aging process.  While exercise is certainly important, you must remember diet also plays an important role in aging.  These anti aging foods can help you feel good and look good for many years to come. Plus, the proper diet will add years to your life.

The following foods (and beverages) have been found to have anti-aging properties:

•    Oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, broccoli, peppers, and other foods high in vitamin C. Vitamin C helps to protect skin from damaging and wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis.

•    Sweet potatoes, carrots and other foods rich in beta-carotene.  Beta carotene, when consumed converts into vitamin A, keeping skin soft.

•    Nuts & Seeds – Almonds, walnuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds are excellent sources of Vitamin E, which is an excellent tonic for the skin. They are also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.

•    Fish such as salmon or tuna – Fish that is high in omega 3 fatty acids help stabilize mood, maintain bone strength and has anti-inflammatory properties to help prevent the visible signs of aging. Nicholas Perricone, MD, a leading anti-aging expert, states that”Omega-3s also boost the ability of the body’s enzymes to pull fat out of storage — from your hips, say — and use it as energy,” he says. “Omega-3s keep you healthy and your skin radiant.”

•    Yogurt– Yogurt is a good source of protein, healthy bacteria and biotin. Biotin increases strength of hair and nails.  Your hair and skin will look radiant, your nails will grow to new lengths,  and since yogurt also helps to stimulate fat metabolism, you’ll lose those extra pounds in no time.

•    Spinach and other dark, leafy greens – Greens are full of antioxidants and vitamins that help keep your complexion clear.

•    Bananas – Bananas are rich in potassium and fiber, as well as magnesium, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B 12. Bananas have been found to be one of the healthiest foods around.  The potassium in bananas reduces the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, and also helps protect the bones. They are a rich source of fiber and are a great energy food. In fact, many runners eat 2 bananas before running a marathon for an extra burst of energy. Bananas have even been found to increase mental alertness.

•    Dark meat chicken, oysters, and beans – These foods are an excellent source of zinc, which keeps the hair and scalp healthy.  Many people who consume foods high in zinc avoid going gray until much later in life.

•    Capasaicin – The compound found in hot peppers, such as jalapenos, boosts heart rate and speeds up metabolism.

•    Watermelon & cantaloupe – Melons are loaded with carotenoids, which help protect skin from sunburn.

•    Milk – Milk is an excellent source of calcium which protects your bones and keeps teeth strong and cavity-free.

•    Apples – We’ve always heard that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and this could certainly be true.  Apples contain a flavonoid known as phloridzin that may help protect women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density.  A study found that apples may also protect the brain from free radical damage that leads to Alzheimer’s.  In a study, people who consumed 2 apples per day lowered  their LDL cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.  Another study found people who ate apples on a regular basis lowered their chances of lung cancer by 50%, most likely due to the high levels of flavonoids.  Apples may also aid in the management of diabetes, weight loss, as well as help to prevent colon, liver and breast cancer.

•    Cherries – Cherries are full of antioxidants, especially tart cherries.  Cherries also are an excellent source of Vitamin C and beta carotene. The antioxidant, anthocyanin, found in cherries, helps protect the immune system, and reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol.  Cherries have even been found to regulate sleep patterns, and proper sleep is important for staying young and healthy.

•    Dark Chocolate – Dark chocolate is high in healthy flavonoids, which is associated with soft, well hydrated skin.  Proof that not everything that’s good for you tastes bad!

•    Red wine – The antioxidants in red wine are good for your heart, and a healthy heart often means less signs of aging.  A glass at dinner is all you need to protect your heart. Going overboard can have ill effects on your liver.

•    Green tea – Green tea is an excellent source of antioxidants and has been found to have many health benefits, including weight loss.  Drink green tea on a regular basis and you will notice you have more energy, and the pounds will easily drop off.

Water – Last but definitely not least is water. This is one of the most important anti aging foods that will flush out the toxins and help our skin looking fresh.

While aging is a normal part of life, there’s no need to just sit back and let it happen. Take control of your life. Exercise and choose a diet tha tis  high in nutrition.   End the fast food madness and try consuming these foods on a regular basis. You will definitely begin to notice a big difference in not only how you feel, but also how you look.  Remember, birthdays are just a number.  The steps you take now toward anti-aging will pay off big in years to come.
